If you’re considering West Asheville, two areas can appear close on a map yet offer very different day-to-day lifestyles.
The Haywood Road corridor and Malvern Hills are a strong example.
Both put you in West Asheville, but the experience of living in each can be noticeably different. For buyers, understanding that difference before focusing on individual houses can make the home search much more productive.
Living Near Haywood Road
Haywood Road is the energetic spine of West Asheville.
The corridor stretches roughly 2.5 miles and is known for its mix of restaurants, coffee shops, local businesses, shops and entertainment.
For someone who places a high value on being able to step outside and have activity nearby, this area deserves attention.
The trade-off is that location within the corridor matters. Street activity, lot configuration, parking and proximity to commercial areas can vary considerably from one property to another.
Living in Malvern Hills
Malvern Hills presents a different version of West Asheville.
Here, the emphasis shifts toward established residential streets, neighborhood character, yards and access to Malvern Hills Park.
The park includes walking paths, playground space, courts, picnic areas and other recreation amenities. The City of Asheville is also moving forward with replacement of the former aging Malvern Hills pool with a new aquatic facility.
For buyers who desire a more residential setting while remaining connected to West Asheville, Malvern Hills can provide an interesting contrast to the Haywood Road corridor.
The Real Question: How Do You Desire to Live?
This is why choosing an Asheville neighborhood should not begin with a list of houses.
Start with daily life.
Do you picture walking to coffee, dinner or neighborhood businesses?
Or do you picture coming home to a more residential street, a yard and nearby green space?
Neither answer is universal.
The better question is:
Which location fits the life I desire — and then, where does the current market give me the best strategic advantage inside that fit?
That is the thinking behind The Three Rings™ framework I use when helping buyers understand Asheville and Western North Carolina.
